The Capitol Steps perform Liberal Shop of Horrors
Saturday, May 1st @ 7:00pm

You have watched "Saturday Night Live" and you tune in to Comedy Central every night for "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report." But when it comes to satire, you haven't seen the real thing until you have been to the Capitol Steps.

The Capitol Steps were born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Ronald Reagan was President when the Steps began, so co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become politicians, then politicians could become entertainers! Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn't find three wise men or a virgin! So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor that was as popular in Peoria as it was on Pennsylvania Avenue.

If you're tired of hearing about health care, bailouts, the environment, the budget, partisan politics, unfaithful politicians, or the Tea Party, then you've come to the wrong place. With musical political satire poking fun at all sides of the issues, it's the one new thing in Washington sure to earn bipartisan support.

Just a few examples of songs that will be performed are:

Strangers on your Flight - IF the T.S.A. can't always keep up with terrorists, at least it's determined to not be too far behind. Here are these latest steps being taken for your protection...

Battle Hymn of the Tea Public - LIBERALS can finally rejoice in their health-care victory and enjoy the respect of all Americans. At last, medical coverage and security for all with hardly a word or a vote in opposition.

Texas School Book Massacre - THE TEXAS BOARD OF EDUCATION saves impressionable young students from being confused about John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, and the Constitution's separation of church and state by striking them from state curriculum standards. Before long, the trend will spread to textbooks used nationwide: out with TJ, in with Calvin and Aquinas; out with the First Amendment, in with the Second. See the Board in action along with color commentary. Or just listen as one former governor explains the way history will now be taught...
